Introducing Devin Fluker!
Las Vegas native,Devin Fluker is the personal style blogger/actress(we’re in the presence of the soon to be famous guys!) of Devin Wears Clothes. Devin’s blog really sparked my interest when I realized she lets her followers dress her, and they do an awesome job at that. Devin utilizes her audience to choose several options to vote on, that she gives them on her blog. After her followers choose which look she then styles the choice to her personal liking.
The Eye: What made you use Tumblr for your blogging platform, versus other platforms like Blogger and Wordpress?
Devin: I originally had a Tumblr for my personal blog. I was using it for about three years and grew to love it, so it just made sense that I would put my fashion page on there as well.
The Eye: Have you ever hesitated to tell someone about your blog?
Devin: Not exactly! I’m trying to get my blog out there and on its feet, so it’s actually the opposite. I’ve gotten questioning looks from family members when I tell them I have a blog, since they aren’t huge internet people. Even then, I tell them to tell their friends, ha.
The Eye: Have you ever had a time you considered deleting your blog?
Devin: Yes, in the very beginning. I was feeling down because I was slow on getting followers - I wasn’t sure anyone really cared about what I was putting out there. Then I realized that if I had a larger follower base, I would need to make sure I kept up with it, and I was intimidated. Would I still have time to post back at school? Then, I realized I was overreacting. First of all, the blog is there partly so I can rediscover things in my own closet, not just for others’ eyes, you know? Second, it isn’t too difficult to make time to post, so I think I was psyching myself out. Any desire I may have had to delete isn’t there anymore!
The Eye: Would you say blogging has any effect on your confidence?
Devin: Absolutely! I get great feedback from my followers. Some will send me messages about how they were inspired by some pieces I put together, which is always fantastic to hear. Others will send me criticism, which I take into consideration, but it ultimately reaffirms that I have my own sense of style that may not fit everyone. Also, having the blog gives me a reason to dress up and put my best self out there on an almost-daily basis, so I get to strut around town in clothes that make me feel great.
The Eye: What would you tell a blogger who’s beginning to feel insecure about her pictures?
Devin: Keep posting! As you keep going, you’ll find inspiration and probably wind up changing your process. You can get out of any rut you feel you’re in if you take action, but if you hang back and dwell on what you think is wrong, you probably won’t end up with good vibes. You might even be tempted to quit instead - that’s no good! Also, take some time to appreciate yourself/your own brand of style. There’s no reason to feel insecure if you’re putting things out there that you want to put out.
The Eye: Can you explain a time you ever faced body image issues and how do you handle them?
Devin: Oh, I faced them for a little more than half of my existence. It started when people would make fun of me in elementary school, kept up through weight issues in middle school and morphed into constantly comparing myself to others in high school. I put on a front of confidence, but it wasn’t until the end of my senior year that I truly started appreciating myself. I’m not exactly sure what triggered the change - I think I was just tired of feeling unhappy. So, I decided to put myself first. I made sure I was surrounded with people who would support me and build me up, quit comparing myself to girls who were entirely different than me and I took some time to recognize what I already had. That was super helpful. I think the first step to loving yourself is to realize the things about yourself that make you unique…and awesome, ha.
